Ipconfig Commands

Windows seven the latest operating system by the famous company owned by the famous billionaire Bill Gates. Considered to be one of the most user friendly software by most critics, it is used by most home computers around the world. The excess use of windows operating system has made it prone to many virus attacks. This can also be avoided by the use of antivirus software.

Windows seven operating system offers what is known as command line arguments which offer one to alter system operations. These commands are normally entered in the command prompt of windows seven. There are close to about 200 commands available in windows seven that the user can access. Some of these commands are ipconfig, msconfig, nbstat, net etc.

This article mainly discusses about the various sub commands in the ipconfig command in the command prompt. This command is available on all windows operating systems since the time of Windows NT. This utility is mainly used in getting the ip address and related information. IP config stands for internet protocol configuration. The output (which is displayed on the screen when the command is typed) given by this command is the IP address, the various virtual and also physical gate ways. IPconfig commands are known to support various subcommands, which are discussed below.

1. Input: ipconfig/all: - This command displays all the information related to the default adapter and also gives the DNS settings and the WINS settings for every adapter.

2. Input: ipconfig/release: - Any TCP/IP connections on the carious adapters are terminated also releases any IP address which is being used by any other application. Although the default syntax is ipconfig/release, in cases where the ip address of a single connection needs to be terminated the syntax followed is ipconfig/release “network name”.

3. Input: Ipconfig/renew- All TCP/IP connections on all network adapters are re-established when this command is entered.

4. Input: ipconfig/displaydns and ipconfig/flushdns: - A cache called the local DNS can be accessed through the displaydns command. The DNS is supposed to contain the ip addresses and the names of remote servers. The flushdns command removes any such cache memory.

5. Input: ipconfig/registerdns: -this command is used update DNS settings instead of just access to it. It is very similar to the commands already discussed. This command is very useful in sorting out problems like failure to obtain a dynamic IP address or failure to connect to the internet. In case one wants to target a particular with these ipconfig commands the syntax is similar to the release command.
